[edit] Optical Illusions

[edit] Illusions #3

Location: sample models / art / optical illusions

Emergent phenomena or properties:

  • The black and white squares that do not match row to row create an illusion of the lines between them being not parallel.

The rules that the agents follow:

  • Line up the rows of black and white squares in a way that they do not match.

The rules give rise to the emergent phenomena or properties:

  • Not sure why, but it is very important that there are space that creates lines between the rows. Also, using the color black and white is very important. Using other colors may not create the illusion.

[edit] Illusions #4

Location: sample models / art / optical illusions

Emergent phenomena or properties:

  • The size differences of the surrounding circles of the 2 circles in the middle create an illusion of the 2 circles difference in size.

The rules that the agents follow:

  • Surround the 2 circles of the same size in middle with different size of circles.

The rules give rise to the emergent phenomena or properties:

  • The set surrounding circles affect our visual perception of the inner circle. The bigger contrast of the 2 set of the surrounding circles, the bigger the contrast of the 2 inner circles.

[edit] Fire

Location: sample models / earth science / fire

Emergent phenomena or properties:

  • Simulates the spread of a fire of a forest.

The rules that the agents follow:

  • The fire spreads in four directions: north, east, south, and west. In order for the fire to spread to the neighboring trees, there must be a tree in either one of the 4 directions (can not spread diagonally).

The rules give rise to the emergent phenomena or properties:

  • The model assumes there is no wind, however there are other factors such as climate which is not considered in this model.
  • In the modeal, the fire spreads only in four directions: north, east, south, and west, however the chances of spreading should be equal distance in all direction.

[edit] Ant Lines

Location: sample models / biology / ant lines

Emergent phenomena or properties:

  • The ants that follow its leader would create a smoother path which is also the shorter route to the destination.

The rules that the agents follow:

  • The leader ant moves go in a random path to find food. After a small delay, each ants behind would follow the ones in front of them.

The rules give rise to the emergent phenomena or properties:

  • Presume that the leader ant would eventually find the food source. With the delay, each ant behinds could see the extra unnecessary path that its leader is taking. Knowing that, the ant behinds could go in a more direct route to its leader’s location. With the longer ants line, and longer delay within follow-able distance, the ants in the back could find a smoother, shorter route to the food.
