According to williamtyndale.com's reformation history timeline, when Tyndale originally proposed to translate the New Testament into English, he was rebuffed by the Catholic church. After the first edition was finally printed, Bishop Tunstall attempted to prevent its distribution by ordering all copies to be purchased and burned. This resulted in the Catholic church financing the second edition of the English New Testament (through the purchases).
